Coraline (12024 Remaster/Remake)

3D: Instead of a remaster like they say, this is a full remake, they recorded again the entire movie with new improved mechanical puppets (as they show in the projection after the movie credits, in an interesting 2d featurette). This movie has many contrasts in terms of depth on the Stereoscopic 3D aspect. There are strong pop outs mixed with plain close-ups. The pop outs are excellent and gorgeous, but they contrast with the following scenes, which are almost flat. It is like they wanted to impress only on some events, and have the spectator attentive to the story the rest of the movie. This also happens with the environments, usually, the first seconds of a new environment are rendered in beautiful depth, and gradually it decreases to almost plain depth. There’s no background depth in the movie except when presenting a scene with a new environment. The exception to this is a tunnel which appears several times, and all times is rendered with good depth both in the foreground and the background. In the credits, there are creatures flying in front and at the back of the text, which is nice and the first time we have seen this, after the credits there’s extra 2d content, as we said.
Having said all that, this is a peculiar concept of story telling, and the 3D, when it is showcased, adds beauty and charm to the entire movie. So it is a strong recommendation to watch in 3D, regardless of the numerical score of this review.

  1. They DID NOT remake the movie with new puppets. They remade the ONE puppet for two reasons. So they could better understand the original process (since it was not documented ) AND to have one for doing promotion for new films since the original puppet appears to be gone.
And there is plenty of depth throughout the movie. It’s typical to get used to depth and not notice it as much as a scene progresses. Some depth is more dramatic as it should be, to give a bit of excitement and dynamics to the film in appropriate places.
